Ben and Jerry’s officially joined the Fair Trade movement back in 2005, visionaries as they are, and in February of this year announced their commitment to becoming 100 percent Fair Trade by 2013.
This means that all their ingredients, from nuts to fruits to rich and delicious chocolate, will be Fair Trade Certified. As of now, they get Fair Trade coffee extract from Mexico, chocolate from the Ivory Coast, and vanilla from Uganda. Their efforts to buy and use Fair Trade ingredients go a long way to help farmers in these countries become economically, socially and environmentally-sustainable.
Free Cone Day is a Ben and Jerry’s tradition, so between the hours of 12 and 8pm (today; March 23) go ahead and check out their vast array of Fair Trade Certified ice creams.
